I think there’s a dangerous tend for kids in the West to romanticize political violence after having grown up in privilege and safety that would be unimaginable to much of humanity even nowadays, let alone across history. And more dangerously, to only look at narrow slices of history they like rather than the full sweep.

That’s not to say seriously violent riots and protests can’t work, it’s just that they cost a huge amount of innocent blood and lives, and of course more often than not, they don’t work. (But those same spoiled kids don’t like reading about those parts of history/current events.)

That being said, I’m not sure we’re strong enough to actually do a peaceful protest properly. The power of MLK wasn’t the willingness to protest, it was the willingness or even eagerness for supporters to be beaten black and blue over and over and over again in a desperate and eventually successful attempt to shock the conscience of a nation. I’ve seen nothing that indicates we’d have the resolve for that.

I’m nowhere near LA but at least on BlueSky there’s been a lot of snide “oh, now they’re telling us to fight fascism by being nice!” Under any comment or post about not getting violent and not burning shit. I’m sure there’s some right wing provocatuers but I imagine there are also a bunch of kids who think lighting cars on fire is in fact fighting fascism etc.

This really just seems like “I want to complain about .ml” with extra steps.

Fyi, what’s happening in LA is a much more trumpian distraction; it’ll suck up all the media oxygen, it’s an (possibly the only, if iirc) issue (immigration) on which he not only has overwhelming Republican support but ALSO a net favourable rating with the public overall.

Ehhhh, trump’s incredibly successful modus operandi for distraction is to bait the Left into over-reacting etc. Epstein is actually important to a swathe of his voters (as is, I assume the respect of one of the wealthiest men on Earth.)

Trump’s usually move is to trigger the Left by saying something that divides us from the majority of folks (as some trans Californian track athlete just won something, perfect time too) whereas having a fight with someone hia base respects that escalates to something his base cares about (rooting out Dem pedophile cabal, regardless of whether one exists) and implicating him… That seems a stunningly bad move and for all his faults, trump is good at the politics of a brawl.

Maybe but I think you either really want this guy to be the good guy here or you’re not reading particularly critically. This guy makes an actual analogy of friendship as “like only being allowed to smell a fine wine instead of drinking it.” which is pretty gross, like the point of friendship is actually dating or nothing. (No one buys a wine to smell it, whereas most normal people can just be friends of whatever gender to be friends.)

I get I’m online and this place skews young, male and not particularly social but this is fairly goshdarn creepy. Like, is this guy unable to function around interesting women who have partners?
